Mercat de Santa Catalina, Palma, Majorca’s Farmer’s Market

by thewelltraveledroad

Whenever we travel and stay in a place with a kitchen, the first thing we do it hit a local grocery store or farmers market. For some reason I get a huge kick out of grocery shopping in different countries. It’s really quite the mystery because when I’m home it is a chore I dread. But I love seeing what locals eat and what is grown in the region I’m visiting. Majorca is no exception. We went to the Mercat de Santa Catalina, which is a largest indoor grocery market in Palma.

Mercat de Santa Catalina is a great place to shop for anyone in the market for freshly caught seafood, quality cheese, meat, fresh produce and even wine. They sell everything from flowers to produce to cheese and meat to tempting desserts. And the freshly caught fish! Every type of fish imaginable is for sale at the Mercat de Santa Catalina!

There were a couple of sushi restaurants in the market, but for the most part it was a large indoor farmer’s market. It is in the Santa Catalina neighborhood, which is known as the Soho of Palma. Everyone from chefs to restauranteers to passionate amateur chefs find what they are looking for among the approximately 50 stalls of locally produced food.

If you are looking for some fresh ingredients for your stay in Majorca, I highly recommend the Mercat de Santa Catalina.

If you’re not in a hurry, stop in one of the many local restaurants or cafes near the market We had a wonderful lunch at the Bianco e Rosso, just up the street.

There is plenty of street parking near the market, and it is easily accessible for strollers and for those with limited mobility. You can visit Mercat de Santa Catalina Mondays thru Saturdays from 7am-5pm.
