Diamond Beach, Iceland

by thewelltraveledroad

A DIAMOND beach? Of course I want to see a diamond beach! Who wouldn’t want to see a diamond beach? Wait – what exactly IS a Diamond Beach? Surely if it was a beach covered with diamonds it would be the most popular place on earth. No, no, it’s not real diamonds (sorry to disappoint!). But if you want to see some cool ice accumulation that looks like giant diamonds on a black sand beach, then this is the place to go. The contrasts of large white chunks of ice against the black sand is incredible. Throw in some adorable ducks diving for their dinner and seal or two, and you may also be singing songs of diamonds and best friends. It’s a quick five-minute walk from the Jökulsárlón_ Glacier Lagoon in Iceland. After visiting the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, simply walk under the highway by following the lagoon run-off. It’s an easy five-minute walk and will be less time than that when you spot the beautiful Diamond Beach. To make things a bit more fun, find a moving ice chunk in the lagoon to follow to the beach. It’s kind of cool to imagine yourself on the journey with your ice. What is it going to bump into and where will it end up?

There are two sides to the beach, so if you are so inclined, after you have spent some time on the lagoon shore side of the beach, walk back to the lagoon parking lot, retrieve your car and drive to the opposite side of the beach. From this side you will see more of the same, but perhaps a bit more ice upon the sand. It’s really a beautiful sight and if you combine Diamond Beach with the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, it makes a wonderful stop on your visit to Iceland.

Details: Free parking and no facilities. However, there are some food trucks and free toilets in the parking lot of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Easy walk compared to most in Iceland for those with limited mobility.
