Cuevas del Drach (Dragon Caves), Majorca

by thewelltraveledroad

The Dragon Caves (Cuevas del Drach) are the best caves I have been in this far in my travels and probably my favorite non-beach attraction in Majorca. You can buy tickets online with your entrance time, which will save you 50 euro cents and allow you to skip the ticket line. We went during off season and I wasn’t sure what time we would arrive so I chose to buy them at the ticket counter. We drove there from Cala Figuera and the drive was a little under an hour. Parking is free, but you MUST have an entrance time, so if you are in Mallorca during the summer months, I recommend buying your tickets online from The Cuevas del Drach website to ensure you get an entrance time for the Dragon Caves.

The descent into the caves is so gradual I didn’t realize how deep we had gone until we reached the stairs on the way out. And there are a LOT of stairs. If you are a bit slower, don’t worry – the staircase is wide so there is plenty of room for others to pass you. And there is a bench at the top of the stairs in case you need to sit and catch your breath! But back to the caves… There must be millions of stalactites of all sizes “dripping” from the ceiling of the Dragon Caves and almost as many stalagmites on the floors of the caves. There are puddles scattered throughout the caves and there is a lake at the very bottom. Once we reached the bottom, we were ushered into bleachers where we were treated to a beautiful boat show. Multilingual announcements were made (no photographing or recording of the show), the lights dimmed and lighted row boats appeared. One of the rowboats Contained a 4 piece orchestra that played classical music for about ten minutes. The show is absolutely beautiful. Once the show is complete, the lights return and we were offered a short boat ride, boarding the boat to the left of the bleachers. The boat ride is lovely and free of charge.

We arrived right at 3:30 and that was the last entrance time of the day even though the Dragon Caves didn’t close until 5pm. The visit through the Dragon Caves is self-guided and it is spectacular. The caves are huge so I had no feelings of claustrophobia. The humidity stays at about 95%, but the air temperature stays a comfortable seventy degrees fahrenheit.

Because of the number of stairs, Cuevas del Drach is not stroller friendly, nor do they allow dogs. Photography is allowed (except during the boat show) without a flash. This is a child-friendly attraction but according to the signs you will need to hold hands with your little ones. Outside the Dragon Caves are a few buildings which contain restrooms, shopping and snacks for sale. There are also several vending machines with water and soda. A particularly nice feature is that there are several picnic tables where you can enjoy a packed lunch. Parking is free.
